SSA Says It Has Corrected About 15% of Active Social Security Numbers. It Doesn’t Say What “Corrected” Means
October 20, 2026
SSA says that “since the beginning of the Trump Administration” it has “corrected nearly 15 percent of all active SSNs across approximately 330 million U.S. citizens and nearly 390 million total records.” It calls this “the most comprehensive SSN record clean-up in the agency’s 91-year history.” The release lists four pieces of the effort: 17 million dates of death added to records that lacked them, using SSA systems and State Department data; about 25 million records with missing citizenship information updated through DHS’s SAVE service; 8.5 million records with “inaccurate citizenship status” now being corrected; and “stronger internal controls” against manual data-entry errors.
