DOJ To Monitor Elections in All 50 States for First Time

November 3, 2026

The Department of Justice announced on Nov. 3, Election Day, that it is deploying approximately 1,000 election monitors and observers across all 50 states. DOJ said it is the first time its monitoring has covered every state and called it the largest monitoring effort in department history. The effort is coordinated by the Civil Rights Division and includes personnel from multiple DOJ components, U.S. Attorney’s Offices, and federal observers from the Office of Personnel Management. Monitors will check for compliance with federal voting rights statutes.

“I am very proud we are deploying the largest monitoring effort in DOJ history, and pursuing transparency for elections in an assertive and nondiscriminatory manner,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Civil Rights Division.

DOJ said voters with questions or complaints about federal voting rights can call 1-800-253-3931, email VEM@usdoj.gov, or file at civilrights.justice.gov/report. Disruptions at a polling place should go first to local election officials, and violence, threats or intimidation should be reported to local police by calling 911, then to the department.
