Package note: This analysis covers an October 15, 2026, White House release and checks its figures against the report it cites: the Council of Economic Advisers’ “The Real Cost of Socialism in America: Scoring the Economic and Fiscal Impact of the DSA Agenda” (October 2026, 92 pages). The release is an advocacy statement with no legal effect. The CEA figures are projections from the administration’s own economists, not CBO scores.

The release says socialist and communist regimes “have killed some 100 million people.” It says the agenda of the Democratic Socialists of America and “the Radical Left,” naming Medicare for All, open borders, mass amnesty, abolishing police and prisons, and the Green New Deal, would cost $49 trillion over ten years, “or as much as $400,000 per American household.” It also says the agenda would “slash wages by nearly 30%,” and that “mortgage rates would soar past 12%.”

Core Tension

The $49 trillion matches the CEA report: a net $48.90 trillion for 2027–2036 in 2026 dollars. The release departs from the report in three ways:

  1. Per household: CEA says “approximately $355,000 per American household,” not “as much as $400,000.”
  2. Two scenarios combined: CEA presents two alternative ways to pay for the agenda. The 28.4% wage drop comes from the tax-financed scenario. The 12% mortgage-rate figure comes from the debt-financed scenario. The release describes both outcomes as though they happen together.
  3. What drives the total: Medicare for All accounts for $47.41 trillion of the $48.90 trillion net. The release leads with other items. The wealth tax offsets $3.94 trillion of the total. CEA did not score the public-safety platform (police and prisons) in dollars.

The “100 million” death toll is not sourced in the release or the CEA report.

  • Report date: CEA released the report October 1; this release recycles it.
  • Independent scoring: CBO has not scored this package. CEA uses its own assumptions, for example on what Medicare for All would cost.
